Thrip Control using Flower Bugs
Thrip Control using Flower Bugs

Flower bugs live for approximately 2 weeks in immature forms, and then 3-4 weeks as adults. Both forms are effective predators, but only the adults can fly. Ideal conditions for them are between 62 and 84 degrees F, with a relative humidity of 60-85%. They can live in a wide variety of conditions, but cooler temperatures will slow their reproduction and development. In order to keep them active and prevent hibernation, temperatures must stay above 73 degrees, or above 50 degrees with supplemental lighting. Blue-spectrum (cool-white fluorescent) works especially well. They also need available prey and pollen-producing plants in order to establish themselves. Flower bugs can deliver a painful bite to humans, but this is very rare, and they are by far the most effective thrips predator. They work well in with Soil-dwelling mites.
